BIO

Marika Kivinen is a Finnish mezzo-soprano. Her repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary. She has premiered solo works for voice and piano/instrumental ensemble by several Finnish composers.

She has performed roles like Dido, 2. Lady, Nicklausse/La Muse and 2. Wood-sprite. In 2019 she premiered the title role in Jens Lindqvist’s chamber opera Solange.Solange!

Kivinen holds a Master of Culture and Arts from Metropolia in Helsinki, where she studied with Seppo Ruohonen and Monika Hauswalter. After graduation she has studied with Cynthia Makris, Björn Blomqvist and Ashley Stafford and has attended master classes with Håkan Hagegård and Lilli Paasikivi.

She loves to work collaboratively and performs regularly in the lieder repertoire. Currently she is recording solo songs by Christian Holmqvist with pianists Eeva Tapanen and Asta Onnila. She is working on a PhD in History at Åbo Akademi University. In her project she is tracing colonialism and exoticism in art songs and performs this repertoire together with pianist Jenna Ristilä and a group of musicians. In 2020 she founded Ensemble MMXX, a quartet which focuses on renaissance polyphony.

She is passionate about liberating and holistic voice pedagogy.
